Under the direction of Professor Judy Baca, undergraduate students will support the creation of an identity workshop meant to empower the academy’s youth. UCLA students, acting as hands on mentors, will challenge elementary school students to dream of who they can be, by creating a portrait that portrays a positive image of their current and future selves. The individual portraits will then be quilted together are a symbol of hope and unity giving a sense of ownership and strength to the school’s alumni. Though the wages received by most Mexican migrants in these decades were quite low, they were considerably higher than the salaries paid for comparable work in Mexico. Most importantly, the number of jobs for foreign laborers seemed unlimited, especially during World War I and on into the early 1920s.

This workshop aids students in actually writing and publishing a book review for a peer-reviewed journal. At the first session, students receive instruction on why graduate students should (or should not) write book reviews, how to choose a book for review, how to chose a journal for submission, how to read a book for review, how to plan and structure a book review, and five common pitfalls of reviewing. Students also form small groups to discuss the book each plans to the second meeting, students bring a draft of their book review for exchange and feedback. At the third meeting, students arrive with a final version of their essay to submit to an editor for publication.
